Job purpose

We are looking for a candidate to join the team at BeFC to provide technical expertise in the areas of biochemistry of enzymes and the development of standard operating procedures for enzyme activity tests, protein determination tests, and participation of electrochemistry studies, reporting the process, reading and reviewing the scientific literature, and use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, etc.

A limited supervision of interns and/or apprentices may be required, however there is no expectation from the post holder to perform staff managerial duties

Special conditions

The job may involve working across all of the BeFC facilities. Lifting and handling of heavy equipment may occasionally be required. Lifting aids will be provided where appropriate.

Contact with chemicals may be part of the job and personal protective equipment will be provided.

From time to time, the post holder may be asked to assist with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities. This will form part of a substantive role and no additional payment for these activities should be expected.

Main duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate will have a strong scientific interest and desire to develop expertise in enzyme associated characterization assays with development of enzymatic biofuel cells.

1) Conducting standardised biological or biochemical assays and laboratory analyses, e.g., enzyme kinetics, protein labelling, UV-Visible Spectroscopy, etc.

2) Compilation and analysis of experimental data and interpretation of results to create summaries of findings for presentation to colleagues

3) Preparation and maintenance of laboratory reagents and stocks

4) Preparation of enzyme-based electrodes and performing electrochemical tests

5) Cleaning and maintaining work areas and responsibility for enzyme regulation in coordination with relevant staff

6) Set up, adjustment, calibration and operation of standard lab equipment

7) Responsible for maintaining detailed lab notebook of all work-related activities

8) Compliance with statutory and company regulations/protocols

Specification

Essential Qualifications/ Experience/ Attributes

Graduate with an engineering or scientific background (Master’sdegree or equivalent)

Ability to use spectrophotometric technics (e.g., UV-Visible)

Understanding of protein nature and enzymology

Experience with basic laboratory equipment (pH meter, precision balance, etc)

Experience with assay/protocol development

Skills with preparation of complex reagents

Ability to work in a team and with partners when necessary

Analytical mindset

Organised, ability to work with efficiency and prioritise own workload

Translate complex and innovative ideas into clear, logical and technically accurate documents/presentation

Desirable Qualifications/ Experience/ Attributes

Graduate from a degree in biology or biochemistry

Electrochemical techniques (CV, chronoamperometry, etc)

Ability to prepare bioelectrodes

Experience with quality management systems

Self-motivated and proactive

Understanding of the English language, both written and oral
