R&D Chemical/Polymer Engineer


Job purpose

We are looking for a candidate to join the team at BeFC to provide technical expertise in the areas of chemistry and macromolecular chemistry (water-soluble polymers) and the development of novel bioelectrodes, experimental reports, product development, etc.

Source and nature of management provided

The post holder will be line managed by the R&D Manager and will work closely with staff across different projects.

Staff management responsibility

A limited supervision of students may be required, however there is no expectation from the post holder to perform staff managerial duties.

Special conditions

Although based in the main BeFC R&D facilities, the job may at times involve working in any of the other BeFC facilities. Lifting and handling of heavy equipment may occasionally be required, lifting aids will be provided where appropriate. Contact with chemicals will be part of the job and personal protective equipment will be provided.  

From time to time, the post holder may be asked to assist with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities. This will form part of a substantive role and no additional payment for these activities should be expected.

Main duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate will have a strong scientific interest and desire to develop expertise in bio-polymers and material functionalisation associated with enzymatic biofuel cells.

1) Material synthesis / functionalisation

Essential Qualifications/Experience/Attributes

1) Practical experience in synthesis and modification of materials and polymers (Essential)

2) Expertise in physicochemistry of solutions (Essential)

3) Experience in formulation (Desirable)

4) Experience with material characterisation (Rheology, UV-vis, AFM, XRD, SEMetc.)

5) Knowledge of polymer–protein conjugates (Desirable)

6) Experience with biofuel cells (Desirable)

7) Project management (Desirable)

8) Experience with quality management systems (Desirable)
