Job purpose

We are looking for a candidate to join BeFC to lead the design and development of liquid packaging and (micro)fluidic delivery systems, including liquid packaging (µL to mL), liquid delivery (frangible seal) and microfluidic surface design for printed, paper-based, and polymeric products.

This position focuses on the engineering of several structures and surfaces such as polymeric and/or paper-based substrates to enable printed components for biofuel cells, biosensors, and other sensor/energy-based devices. A key focus is on the use of ecofriendly, bio-based and biodegradable materials.

In addition, this position requires understanding of the chemistry between polymeric substances and physicochemical/electrochemical characterisation of those printed components. Work will cover development, process optimisation, characterisation, experimental reports, etc. with our multidisciplinary team.

Source and nature of management provided

The post holder will be line managed by the Scientific Program Manager but will work closely with other members of Innovation Division and other divisions in BeFC across different projects.

Staff management responsibility

A limited supervision of interns/apprentices may be required, however there is no expectation from the post holder to perform staff managerial duties.

Special conditions

Although based in the main BeFC R&D facilities, the job may at times involve working in any of the other BeFC facilities. Lifting and handling of heavy equipment may occasionally be required, lifting aids will be provided where appropriate. Contact with chemicals will be part of the job and personal protective equipment will be provided as well as a Chemical Risk Training.

From time to time, the post holder may be asked to assist with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities. This will form part of a substantive role and no additional payment for these activities should be expected.

Main duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate will have a strong interest and desire to develop expertise in liquid packaging and fluidic delivery for electrochemical reactions associated with energy and sensor devices.

1) Design and development of liquid packaging and/or (micro)fluidic delivery systemsfor various applications (bioenergy-based and biosensing devices)

2) Surface functionalisation of substrates such as paper, polymers, etc.

3) Studying physicochemical morphological characterisation

4) Contribution to intra and inter-divisional projects

5) Data analysis and processing and communication of findings

6) Creation of technical reports

7) Assisting in the filing and/or protection of intellectual property (IP)

8) Compliance with statutory and company regulations/protocols


Essential Qualifications/ Experience/ Attributes

Graduate with a strong scientific (PhD degree or equivalent)background and/or industrial (5+ years) experience

Experience with microfluidic surface design

Experience with liquid encapsulation

Experience with paper-based substrates

Experience with material characterisation (UV-vis, AFM, XRD, SEMetc.)

Ability to work in a team and with partners when necessary

Analytical mindset

Organised, ability to work with efficiency and prioritise own workload

Translate complex and innovative ideas into clear, logical and technically accurate documents/presentations

Graduate from a PhD degree program in Material Science

Experience with thermodynamic of fluidics

Project management

Experience with quality management systems

Independent and self-motivated

Understanding of the English language, both written and oral
