BeFC at Electronica 2022, the world’s leading trade fair for electronics by Messe München

In November 15 to 18, BeFC will be participating in the 2022 edition of the world’s leading trade fair and conference for electronics: Electronica, in Münich.

Thanks to the support of our partners Business France and Minalogic, BeFC’s team will attend and showcase in our booth the eco-friendly miniature battery and its sensing platform solution.

Electronica by Messe München

Electronica is a giant of the electronic industry. Electronica has been happening every other year since 1964. It covers the entire electronics spectrum: from components to systems, applications, solutions and services.

To give an image of the scale of this gathering, we can imagine that Electronica transforms the event space into a small city or village, entirely dedicated to electronic innovations. The 2020 edition occurred online because of the pandemic, but the edition right before had over 182 000 square meters of exhibition space. It gathered 80 000 visitors from 80 countries, and 3100 exhibitors from 50 countries. Electronica is organised Mess München, one of the largest trade fair companies in the world.

People attend Electronica to strengthen their expertise through high-end conferences and specialized forums, and to benefit from a total overview of the electronic industry. Nowhere else in the world is there such a specialised concentration of the existing technology in the same place. Almost every conceivable sector, sub-category of electronics and their derivatives can be found at Electronica. The event also offers a top-class supporting program with a wide range of conferences, forums and special events that focus on knowledge transfer and professional exchange. Participants will get a rundown of everything that is currently moving the electronic industry and its latest trends. For instance, the forums will comprehend practical lectures on topics such as IoT, printed electronics, sensors, connectivity…and BeFC is looking forward to one of the Special Events, the WEEF – the World Ethical Electronics Forum. It aims to inspire global electronic innovators with discussions on ethics and sustainable development goals.

Electronica 2022: Focus on sustainability

What contribution can electronic make to climate change and energy transition? This is the question that this year’s edition of #Electronica aims to discuss, by making sustainability a transversal theme of the forums. Dr. Aleksandrs Sergejevs, Electronics Manager, Alban Thierry and Lucas Danrley Cajé de Souza, both Electronic Engineers at BeFC will showcase our ecologic biofuel cells to bring our share of the answer. The 2022 edition of Electronica established Sustainability as a transversal theme of the international event. E-mobility, smart energy, power electronics, IoT and AI. These topical themes, and the exhibitors of sustainable electronics will be highlighted and prioritised. Thanks to our partners Business France and Minalogic, BeFC has secured a booth in Electronica 2022 and our team will be present to exhibit the sustainable side of our eco-friendly miniature batteries.

Due to the general willingness of countries to make environment a priority and reinforce ecological choices in order to achieve the sustainable development goals, industries are becoming more and more aware of corporate environmental responsibility. These measures encompass eco-designing. This approach aims to reduce the environmental impacts of products, by taking account different factors such as the products’ entire life cycle, their manufacturing and end-of-life processing. By making informed ecological choices upstream, electronic products designers play an important role in reducing the environmental impact.

In particular, the electronic industry is a field that has to consider regulatory and legislative constraints because of the nature of its raw materials. For instance, the RoHS – Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment, regulates and limits the use of toxic substances such as mercury, cadmium…. The electronic industry is increasingly aware of the necessity to select renewable and non-toxic materials.

At Electronica, BeFC’s team will be showcasing its eco-friendly biofuel cell, allowing industrials to see an ecological alternative to conventional miniature batteries. The BeFC does not contain any toxic material because it makes electricity from paper and enzymes. It was conceived thanks to the joint work of interdisciplinary experts (paper, biochemistry, electrochemistry, nanobiosensors) to find a creative sustainable solution. Through enzymatic reactions, energy is generated without the use of dangerous materials. Instead, BeFC’s energy solution uses glucose and oxygen, two biofuels that we can find abundantly in nature. BeFC’s paper-based cell is made from organic materials, mostly cellulose and carbon.

Will you attend Electronica 2022? How can electronics contribute to climate change and energy transition in your opinion?
