BeFC (Bioenzymatic Fuel Cells), a company which creates sustainable energy/sensor solutions using paper and enzymes, has announced its participation in the HIC International Accelerator Programme (United  Kingdom). The collaboration, which was initiated almost a year ago, aims to develop a healthcare monitoring solution beneficial to both patients and medical staff, by tracking patient health data from the hospital to the home.

HIC supports BeFC entry  into the UK market through the International Accelerator Programme and via NHS platforms.

Exploiting a micro biofuel cell/electronic sensor application for healthcare intitatives

The International Accelerator Programme (IAP) is a specialised initiative led by the Health Innovation Consortium (HIC) which has been uniquely designed to facilitate access to the UK digital healthcare market for early-stage start-ups and innovation/healthcare technologies.

“BeFC and HIC met at the MEDICA 2022 trade fair , as part of an IAP networking exercise. This meeting blossomed into a relationship where HIC suggested entry to their international accelerator programme. The programme aims to provide a structured incubation  platform for emerging healthcare innovators to facilitate technological growth and development,  reduce time-to-market and drive positive changes in the UK healthcare system. The HIC/IAP partnership is currently connecting BeFC with UK healthcare providers interested in adopting new technologies to improve patient healthcare, support staff and position the NHS  at the forefront of digital transformation.

"For BeFC, entry into this programme is an important stepping stone and allows us to break down time-consuming barriers of entry into medical and hospital sectors. With their support, we aim to deploy our first pre-clinical/clinical trials on patients with BeFC® products using real-time data and remote monitoring to allow clinicians to make better, more well-informed decisions on patients’ health.” - Marie BERTHUEL, Chief Product Officer, BeFC

Improving NHS patient healthcare with deeptech technology

BeFC’s mission is to solve some of the most pressing challenges faced by NHS organisations. These include providing clinicians with real-time feedback on patient health, improving the patient experience, patient identification, data encryption and the transfer of vital information between different internal healthcare departments to help prevent misinformation. Furthermore as part of the  "net zero” initiative, BeFC’s data-driven products could significantly help streamline NHS healthcare processes as well as mitigate the impact of environmental waste and improve NHS sustainability footprints

BeFC offers an innovative solution for monitoring patients in hospitals that is non-invasive, comfortable, and environmentally-friendly, thereby radically improving the patient experience. Its connected wearable solution provides real-time feedback on a patients’ health, monitoring vital signs such as skin temperature and heart rate. The solution stands out from other technologies in the healthcare market because it is powered by an environmentally-friendly, paper-based biofuel cell, that is both safe and sustainable, especially when compared with traditional lithium coin-cell batteries. This unique design makes it a viable, low-cost, single-use solution for patient monitoring.

“At HIC, we have been working closely with BeFC to develop a state-of-the-art technology to improve patient care across the NHS. What stands out to us about BeFC is their commitment to sustainability and net-zero, which is so important in healthcare today. Throughout the International Accelerator Programme, HIC has provided support including but not limited to Value Proposition, Regulatory and Compliance Recommendations and an NHS Landscape analysis, and we look forward to continuing our work with BeFC with the ultimate goal of an NHS implementation of their solution.” – Olivia CLARKE, Delivery Lead at HIC

By partnering with BeFC, UK hospitals can improve patient outcomes while reducing their environmental impact. Their solutions help clinicians make informed decisions about patient care, leading to better outcomes and improved patient satisfaction, whilst reducing the care force workload. With BeFC, hospitals can embrace innovative technologies that supports their sustainability goals while delivering exceptional patient care and improved logistics.

Utilising their market knowledge, networks and expertise, the partnerships will harness IAP innovators’ implementation and adoption in the NHS, reducing risk factors and maximising market success.
