BeFC Biofuel cells: Sustainable, transformative technology

BeFC has been named a finalist in the renowned Loyola Chicago Health Equity Quest! The competition strives to find the disruptive technologies of the future in the healthcare sector, with a view to identifying cutting-edge technology that will transform patient healthcare – sustainably!

BeFC’s biofuel cells are a sustainable energy source that provide power like a battery and include an environmentally-friendly sensor platform well suited to the medical sector. The BeFC biofuel cell/active sensor technology can significantly reduce environmental damage at different levels, with its active sensor platform proving a vital means of monitoring patients’ vital signs such as ph., temperature, blood pressure, vital signs.

A world class competition co-organised by Loyola University Chicago and MATTER

This competition was spawned by the U.S. healthcare system's need to develop more sustainable and equitable products and processes for people impacted by climate change. The prestigious Loyola University Chicago collaborated with MATTER, an international health startup incubator that mobilizes a community of innovators, via this competition.

This alliance of academia and innovation has often proven to be a real catalyst for success, and it is astounding to see so many resources implemented in the name of health equity. Above all, within the context of the Loyola Chicago Health Equity Quest, the actions of key players, stakeholders and startups are all geared up to promote health equity. MATTER has succeeded in boosting the activities and efficiency of several startups towards the medical sector, with some becoming real global success stories.

BeFC: A perfect positioning for sustainable healthcare technology

BeFC was made a finalist in this competition on the back of the strength of the company’s core technology – a disruptive new energy source, based upon a sustainable biofuel cell that links with active sensing modules to generate energy and real time data on patients’ vital signs (the biofuel cell generates the energy for the sensor which captures the data).

BeFC Business Developper, Sofia Malferrari attended the event and pitched the enzymatic biofuel cell technology to the judges. She explained how the BeFC enzymatic biofuel cell answers the challenges of Loyola Health Challenge Equity Quest, through what is a unique technological offering.

Powered by nature: Biofuel cell technology that taps into the power of enzymes

The miniature paper-based fuel cells do not store energy like batteries but create electricity using natural resources (enzymes, glucose and oxygen). These fuel cells are capable of replacing some conventional lithium batteries, huge quantities of which are currently being dumped in nature (landfill) or incinerated. By choosing to integrate a BeFC biofuel cell into the design of their products, companies can significantly reduce their environmental impact.

This has a two-fold effect: the organisations are able to meet their sustainability targets, but they are also able to reduce expenditure on meeting expensive regulatory requirements for toxic waste disposal.

This advances the fight against climate change and reduces damage to the environment. Our eco-friendly miniature fuel cell was designed by a research team whose primary goal was to provide a sustainable alternative to metal-based energy sources and improve the way we behave and affect our natural environment.

Furthermore, the eco-designed digital platform that accompanies the biofuel battery is a sensing solution featuring super-sensitive captors perfectly positioned for the medical and healthcare sectors. This allows doctors and health professionals to retrieve information on their patients' vital signs, to monitor health and ensure that patients take their treatments at the right time. The BeFC enzymatic fuel cell can also greatly improve some everyday health products – for example by digitising blood tests and optimising other tools such as pregnancy-testing kits.
